Torn Paper Mosaic
What you need
- scraps of coloured paper
- a glue stick and a big sheet of paper with a shape drawn on it, like a circle, a star or a fish
How to do it
- Draw a big shape on the paper together and choose which colours should fill it.
- Let them tear the scraps into small pieces, pinching and pulling with both hands.
- Rub glue inside the shape a bit at a time and press the pieces on, close together, until no white shows.
- Hold it up at the end: can they trace the edge of the shape with a finger?
Why it matters
Small torn pieces, fitted close together, build the shape bit by bit, so a picture appears out of their own scraps.
What they're learning
- Tearing small
- Pinch, pull, rip.
- Filling a space
- Pieces close, no gaps.
- Edges of a shape
- Keeping inside the line.
What to look for
Notice them tearing a piece smaller to fill a gap.
A tip
A washable glue stick is the least messy. Keep the shape big and simple so it fills up while they're still enjoying it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: bigger pieces and a bigger shape
Harder: fill the shape with two colours in a pattern, or put a small shape inside the big one
