Drum Roll, Then Hush
What you need
- a table to drum on
How to do it
- Drum your hands on the table, slowly at first, then fast and loud.
- Stop suddenly and say 'hush' with a finger to your lips.
- Wait in the quiet for a moment together.
- Let them start the next drum roll and decide when it stops.
Why it matters
The hush after the noise is the fun part, and waiting in it is a small bit of self-control.
What they're learning
- Loud and quiet
- A big noise and a sudden silence, one straight after the other.
- Stopping on a signal
- Hands still on 'hush' is quick self-control.
- Rhythm
- Slow drumming, fast drumming and a stop is an early feel for rhythm.
What to look for
Watch for them holding their hands up and still in the hush, waiting.
A tip
Keep the quiet short at first, just a moment, and stretch it as they get the idea.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: drum together and stop together on 'hush'
Harder: drum quietly, build up to loud, then hush
