Kitchen Shape Hunt
What you need
- a plate
- a pad of sticky notes
How to do it
- Hold up a plate and say 'circle', then a sticky note and say 'square'.
- Walk around the kitchen together looking for more circles and squares.
- Stick a sticky note on each square thing you find.
- Tour your finds again at the end and name each one.
Why it matters
The kitchen is full of circles and squares, and finding them in real things gives the words something to hold on to.
What they're learning
- Shape spotting
- Seeing a circle in a clock or a bowl is finding a shape in the everyday.
- Shape words
- Circle and square get said many times, each time about something real.
- Looking closely
- Checking edges and corners is careful, patient looking.
What to look for
Notice them pointing at something round before you've asked.
A tip
Clocks, bowls and floor tiles are all good finds.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hunt for circles only
Harder: add triangles, like a slice of toast cut corner to corner
