Colour Cup Match
What you need
- a set of coloured stacking cups
- blocks in the same colours
How to do it
- Set out three stacking cups in different colours.
- Hold up a block, say its colour, and drop it in the cup that matches.
- Pass them the next block and ask 'which cup?'
- Say the colour of whichever cup it lands in.
Why it matters
Matching a block to a cup is a simple 'same', with colour as the only clue.
What they're learning
- Colour matching
- Finding the cup that looks the same as the block is sorting by colour alone.
- Colour words
- Every block comes with its colour said out loud.
- Aiming
- Dropping a block into a cup takes a steady hand over a small target.
What to look for
Watch for them holding a block over one cup, checking, then moving to another.
A tip
Take out any cup whose colour has no block, so there's always a match to find.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use two cups in very different colours
Harder: add a fourth cup and a few more blocks
