Card Flag Bunting
What you need
- four palm-sized flags cut by you from a clean cereal box, each with one hole punched near the top, and a hole punch for you to use
- chunky crayons
- a shoelace no longer than your forearm, knotted at one end
How to do it
- Let them colour the card flags with chunky crayons.
- Sit together on a rug and, holding the knotted end, push the tip through the first flag's hole to show them.
- Hand over the tip and the next flag, and see what they do.
- When all the flags are on, pinch the open end and hold the string up between you, or lay it out to admire.
Why it matters
Each flag has one hole to find, so pushing the tip in and watching it come out the other side is easy to see, and the finished string looks like real bunting.
What they're learning
- Threading
- Finding the hole and pulling the tip through the other side.
- Two hands together
- One hand holds the flag while the other pushes the lace.
- Finishing a job
- Every flag on, then the whole string held up together.
What to look for
Watch for them peeping through a flag's hole to find the tip coming out.
A tip
Stay right beside them while the lace is out. It is for threading only, never tied into a loop and never round a neck or wrist, and the string is held up, never worn. Bin the punched-out circles, put away any flag that is torn, and pack the lace and flags away together.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold each flag still while they push the tip in
Harder: let them pick which colour of flag goes on next
