Towel Tug Fold
What you need
- small hand towel or washcloth
How to do it
- Lay the towel flat on the floor in front of them.
- Show them grabbing a corner and pulling it into a bunch.
- Show them one simple fold in half.
- Let them scrunch, pull, and fold it however they like.
Why it matters
Gripping and pulling fabric works the same hand muscles they'll need for buttons and zips later on.
What they're learning
- Bilateral coordination
- Using both hands together to fold works the same two-handed teamwork needed later to hold paper still while cutting it.
- Grip strength
- Bunching and pulling fabric builds the hand muscles behind doing up buttons and zips.
- Sequencing
- Following grab-then-fold in order is an early taste of the multi-step routines behind getting dressed on their own.
What to look for
Watch for them attempting the fold themselves after you've shown it once or twice, even if it's messy.
A tip
Use a small, textured towel rather than a slippery one — easier for little hands to grip and bunch.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use a thinner, smaller cloth that bunches easily
Harder: use a thicker towel that takes more grip strength to fold
