Box Block Stack
What you need
- a small cardboard box
- a few chunky toys
How to do it
- Set the box down as a base on the floor.
- Help your toddler balance chunky toys on top, one at a time.
- Count each piece out loud as it goes on.
- Let them tip the whole stack over when it's their turn to end it.
Why it matters
Carefully placing each piece without toppling the stack sharpens the small, precise hand movements needed for later writing.
What they're learning
- precise placement
- Steadying a hand to set one piece on another without a wobble is the same control needed for stacking coins or threading a shoelace later.
- counting aloud
- Counting each piece as it's added links numbers to real objects, an early step toward counting confidently at school.
- patience with effort
- Trying again after a wobble teaches that a slow, steady hand gets better results than a rushed one.
What to look for
Watch for them slowing down and steadying their hand before letting go of each piece.
A tip
Let them choose when to knock it down. Ending on their terms keeps it fun rather than frustrating.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just two or three toys for a quick, sturdy stack
Harder: add more toys and see how tall it can go before it wobbles
