Bottle Skittles: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Bottle Skittles

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • six plastic bottles, rinsed, with their lids on
  • a soft ball
  • masking tape for a throwing line

How to do it

  1. Stand the bottles in a triangle on the floor or the patio and tape a line a few big steps away.
  2. Take turns rolling the ball from behind the line.
  3. After each turn, count how many fell over and how many are still standing.
  4. Stand them back up together and let the next player go.

Why it matters

Rolling, knocking down and counting is a whole game with rules and turns, and the score is real counting.

What they're learning

Aiming
Rolling the ball straight at the bottles.
Taking turns
Waiting behind the line until it's their go.
Counting what's left
How many fell, and how many are still standing.

What to look for

Notice them standing behind the line without a reminder.

A tip

On a windy day outside, put a little water in each bottle and screw the lids on tight so they don't blow over.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: stand the bottles closer, in a straight line

Harder: keep score with a pile of blocks, one for each bottle knocked down, and count who has most at the end
