Clap Clap Stamp: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Clap Clap Stamp

from 40 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • music on a phone or speaker

How to do it

  1. Put on a song with a strong beat and make a pattern: clap, clap, stamp.
  2. Do it a few times together until your child can keep going on their own.
  3. Add a new move to the end, like clap, clap, stamp, jump.
  4. Let them make up a pattern for you to copy. Then get one move wrong on purpose and see if they notice.

Why it matters

A pattern you can dance is a pattern you can feel, and catching your mistake means knowing what comes next.

What they're learning

Patterns
Clap, clap, stamp, over and over, in the same order.
Remembering moves
Holding a pattern in mind while the music plays.
Keeping a beat
Putting each move on the beat of the song.

What to look for

Notice them saying the moves under their breath as they do them.

A tip

Pick a song with a slow, steady beat to start with.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use just two moves: clap, stamp

Harder: make a four-move pattern and speed it up as the song goes on
