Bath Time Names
What you need
- a sponge and a cup in the bath
- a towel for after
How to do it
- In the bath, hand them one thing at a time and name it: "sponge."
- Name it again as they squeeze or pour: "sponge, squeeze."
- Keep to the same few things each night.
- Name the towel as you wrap them up.
Why it matters
The same few bath things every night means the same few words every night, and that repetition is what turns a word into one they can say.
What they're learning
- The same words nightly
- Bath things are the same each time, so the words are too.
- Words with actions
- Hearing "sponge" while squeezing one joins word and thing.
- A calm routine
- Bath time is relaxed, which makes talking easier.
What to look for
Watch for them holding a bath toy out to you as if to show you.
A tip
If a word comes out, however unclear, say it back clearly and add one more: "ball" becomes "big ball". Never ask them to repeat it. Stay within arm's reach the whole time they're in the bath.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just the cup
Harder: pause before naming each thing as you hand it over
