Banana Slices to Share
What you need
- a banana
- a table knife
- a plate to cut on
- a small bowl for each person
How to do it
- Peel the banana together and lay it on the plate.
- Show them how to hold the banana still with one hand and saw gently with the table knife.
- Let them slice the whole banana into rounds.
- Share the slices out between the bowls, one for you, one for me, and count how many each person has.
Why it matters
Cutting real food with a real knife is a proper job, and sharing it out means making sure it is fair.
What they're learning
- Using a knife
- Holding the food still with one hand while the other saws.
- Sharing out
- One for you, one for me, until the slices run out.
- Counting
- Saying how many slices each bowl has, then checking they match.
What to look for
Notice them checking that every bowl has the same, and moving a slice across to make it fair.
A tip
A blunt table knife cuts banana easily. Keep sharp knives well out of reach, and stay right beside them while they cut.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: cut the banana in half first so each piece is shorter to hold
Harder: slice a soft pear too, and share both fruits out fairly
