Shine the Windows: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Shine the Windows

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • a small spray bottle of plain water
  • a dry cloth

How to do it

  1. Find a low window or a glass door and look for the smudges and fingerprints together.
  2. Let your child spray a little water onto the glass, two or three squirts at a time.
  3. Wipe in big circles with the cloth, then up and down, until the drips have gone.
  4. Stand back and look through it. Can they find a smudge they missed?

Why it matters

Squeezing a spray trigger works the fingers and big circles work the whole arm, with a clearer view as the reward.

What they're learning

Squeezing a trigger
Strong fingers, two or three squirts.
Big wiping circles
Round and round with the whole arm.
Spotting smudges
Looking for the bits they missed.

What to look for

Notice them tilting their head to look along the glass for smudges.

A tip

Plain water is all it needs, no cleaning spray, and keep to glass they can reach from the floor.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: you spray and they wipe

Harder: do the outside of the glass too, and work out whether each smudge is on the inside or out
