Wrap Teddy's Present
What you need
- a small box, like an empty toothpaste box
- a sheet of wrapping paper or brown paper
- sticky tape
- a sticker or two
- child scissors
- a soft toy
How to do it
- Let your child choose a little toy from the toy box as a present for teddy and pop it in the box.
- Snip a piece of paper big enough to cover the box, with a bit spare.
- Put the box in the middle of the paper, fold one side over and hold it while your child presses on the tape.
- Fold the other side and the ends together, tape them down and add a sticker on top.
- Let your child hand the present to teddy, then open it for teddy and say thank you.
Why it matters
Wrapping a real box is folding, holding and taping all at once, and giving it to teddy is a pretend version of a real Christmas moment.
What they're learning
- Two hands, two jobs
- One hand holds the paper down while the other presses the tape on.
- Folding
- Folding paper round a corner takes careful pinching and pressing.
- Giving
- Choosing a present for someone else and handing it over is thinking about how they feel.
What to look for
Notice them holding the paper flat with one hand while the other presses the tape on.
A tip
A box is far easier to wrap than a soft or round toy. Tear a few pieces of tape and stick them along the table edge, ready to grab. Put the scissors away as soon as you finish.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: tear the tape pieces for them and just wrap the paper round the box like a blanket
Harder: wrap two presents of different sizes and let them pick the paper for each
