Wipe The Table: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Wipe The Table

from 16 months · 5-10 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • damp cloth
  • table

How to do it

  1. Hand your toddler a damp cloth after a meal.
  2. Show them one big circle wipe on the table.
  3. Let them wipe the whole surface their own way.
  4. Praise the spots they get, skip the ones they miss.

Why it matters

Copying a real chore builds coordination and makes them feel like a genuine helper, not just a bystander.

What they're learning

Wide arm circles
Copying your big circular wipe trains the shoulder muscles they'll later use to steer a crayon across paper.
Task sequencing
Doing the whole table start-to-finish teaches them a job has a beginning and an end, the same skill behind getting dressed solo one day.
Real-world purpose
Wiping something actually dirty (not a toy) shows them their effort changes the world, which fuels the confidence to keep trying hard things.

What to look for

Watch for them going back to re-wipe a spot they missed without being told — that's them checking their own work.

A tip

Damp, not wet — a soaked cloth just smears crumbs into paste. Do this right after the meal while the mess is still soft.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: wipe just one small placemat instead of the whole table

Harder: give a second cloth to wipe the chair too
