Winter Hat and Gloves
What you need
- their coat, a hat, a scarf and gloves
How to do it
- Lay the things out on the floor in the order they go on: coat, scarf, hat, and gloves last.
- Let your child put the coat on and start the zip with you, then pull it up themselves.
- Wrap the scarf round together, pull the hat down over their ears, and check it in the mirror.
- Gloves go on last: find the thumb hole first, then wiggle each finger into its place.
Why it matters
Gloves are fiddly, with a hole for every finger, and laying everything out in order lets them work through it one thing at a time.
What they're learning
- Zipping up
- Pulling the zip up once it's started.
- Finding the thumb
- Thumb first, then the fingers.
- Doing it in order
- Coat, scarf, hat, gloves.
What to look for
Notice them wiggling their fingers to find the right holes.
A tip
Try it on a slow day at home, so there's no rush on the first cold day out.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use mittens, with just a thumb to find
Harder: mix the things up and let them decide what goes on first
