Water The Plant
What you need
- small cup
- watering can or jug
- houseplant
How to do it
- Fill a small cup or jug with a little water.
- Carry it together to a houseplant.
- Let your toddler tip the water slowly into the pot.
- Check the soil together afterward.
Why it matters
Carrying water carefully without spilling teaches patience and gentle, controlled movement.
What they're learning
- Controlled pouring
- Tipping the cup slowly without dumping it builds the same wrist control they'll use pouring their own cereal milk in a year or two.
- Cause & effect
- Watching dry soil darken right after they pour connects an action to an immediate, visible result they caused.
- Gentle handling
- Being careful with a living plant teaches a physical gentleness that carries over to handling a new pet or a younger sibling.
What to look for
Watch for them slowing their pour on their own as the cup gets closer to empty, rather than tipping it all at once.
A tip
Fill the cup no more than a third full — it's less about the amount of water the plant needs and more about giving them a spill they can recover from easily.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you hold the jug while they tip the last little bit
Harder: let them carry and water two plants in a row
