Warm Rice Sock Squeeze
What you need
- clean sock
- uncooked rice
- rubber band or knot
How to do it
- Fill a sock with rice and knot the end tightly or seal it with a rubber band so no rice can spill out.
- Warm it briefly (a minute in a warm — not hot — spot works) and check the temperature yourself first.
- Let your toddler squeeze, pat, and hug the rice sock.
- Check the seal regularly and retire the sock if it starts to fray.
Why it matters
Squeezing a soft, weighted, slightly warm object is calming and gives strong sensory input to busy little hands.
What they're learning
- Hand strength
- Repeated squeezing builds the grip strength behind holding pencils and opening containers later on.
- Self-regulation
- The deep, even pressure of squeezing something soft helps little bodies settle when feelings run big.
- Sensory exploration
- Noticing weight and warmth through touch alone sharpens the sense discrimination that later supports focus and attention.
What to look for
Watch for them pressing the sock against their cheek or chest — that's them self-soothing with the weight and warmth.
A tip
Always check the seal is sound and the rice can't spill loose before handing it over — always sealed and always supervised.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: skip warming it and just use it at room temperature
Harder: make two socks with different fillings (rice and dried beans) to compare weight and sound
