Picture Clue Treasure Hunt
What you need
- four sticky notes
- a crayon
- a small toy for the treasure
How to do it
- Draw four simple picture clues, one on each sticky note: a sofa, a door, a shoe, a teddy.
- Hide the toy at the last place, then stick each clue at the place before it, and hand the first one to your child.
- Let them look at the picture, say what it is, and go there to find the next clue.
- The last clue leads them to the treasure. Then let them draw clues for you to follow.
Why it matters
Reading a picture to find the next place is reading before words, and following the clues one after another keeps the order in their head.
What they're learning
- Reading pictures
- A drawing of a shoe means go to the shoes.
- Following steps in order
- One clue leads to the next.
- Drawing clues
- Making a picture someone else can follow.
What to look for
Notice them turning a clue round to work out what it shows.
A tip
Stick the clues low on things that stay put, and keep them well away from the stairs and the oven.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use two clues and walk round with them
Harder: draw a clue that needs a think, like a tap for the kitchen
