Uh Oh Drop
What you need
- a soft toy or a rolled-up pair of socks
- a basket
How to do it
- Sit on the rug with a basket between you and a soft toy in your hand.
- Hold it just over the basket, let go and say "Uh oh!" in a big, sing-song voice.
- Hand them the toy to drop, pause before you speak, and see what they do.
- Say "uh oh" together, fish it out and play again.
Why it matters
Something falling and an "uh oh" go together every time, so the word comes up again and again, ready for them to say it with you.
What they're learning
- Copying words
- A short, sing-song "uh oh" that is easy to say back.
- Letting go
- Opening the hand on purpose to drop the toy.
- Cause and effect
- The toy drops and the same words follow.
What to look for
Watch for them looking up at your face as the toy drops, ready for the "uh oh".
A tip
Use something soft and a basket on the floor, so nothing falls far and nothing breaks. If they drop it and laugh instead of talking, that is a turn too.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: say "uh oh" as soon as it drops, every time, and enjoy the game
Harder: add a second word as it lands, "uh oh, gone", and see which one comes back
