Taped-Down Sheet
What you need
- a big sheet of paper
- tape
- a chunky crayon
How to do it
- Tape a big sheet of paper flat to the table so it can't slide.
- Sit them close to the table with their feet supported.
- Give them a chunky crayon.
- Let them scribble all over the sheet.
Why it matters
Paper that stays put means all their effort goes into the crayon, not into chasing the page round the table.
What they're learning
- Steering the crayon
- A still page lets them concentrate on the marks.
- Sitting to draw
- Sitting close with feet supported is a steady way to work.
- Pressure
- Pressing on a firm surface gives bold marks.
What to look for
Watch for their other hand resting on the paper while they draw.
A tip
Let them hold it however it sits in their hand; there's no need to fix their grip at this age. Stay with them, and put the crayons away afterwards.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use an even bigger sheet
Harder: tape down a smaller sheet
