Sock Ball Basket
What you need
- rolled-up socks
- laundry basket
How to do it
- Roll 4-6 socks into balls.
- Set the basket a step away from your toddler.
- Show them how to toss one sock ball in.
- Let them keep going until the basket's full.
Why it matters
Aiming and releasing on purpose builds the hand control they'll later use for feeding themselves and drawing.
What they're learning
- Aim & release
- Letting go of the sock at the right moment to land it in the basket is the same timed release they'll need to drop food on a spoon or a peg in a hole.
- Whole-arm control
- Winding up and throwing works the shoulder and elbow together, building the arm strength that makes climbing onto furniture and playground equipment easier.
- Cause & effect
- Seeing the sock land (or miss) and trying again teaches them that their actions change outcomes — the root of problem-solving.
What to look for
Watch for them adjusting their throw after a miss instead of just tossing randomly.
A tip
Roll the socks tight so they don't unravel mid-air, and let missed throws stay on the floor — chasing them is half the fun.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: move the basket right in front of their hands so it's just a drop
Harder: move the basket a few steps back so they have to walk and aim
