Tallest to Smallest
What you need
- five soft toys of different sizes
- a shelf or a bit of floor to line them up on
How to do it
- Ask your child to find five soft toys, all different sizes.
- Ask them to line them up from the tallest to the smallest.
- Check together by standing two side by side: which one is taller?
- Mix them up, line them up the other way, smallest first, then find where a new toy fits in.
Why it matters
Comparing two at a time and fitting each one into a line is putting things in order, with toys they already love.
What they're learning
- Size words
- Tall, taller, tallest, said side by side.
- Putting in order
- Each toy has a place in the line.
- Checking by comparing
- Standing two toys back to back to see.
What to look for
Notice them moving a toy along the line to find its place, without starting again.
A tip
Pick toys that sit up well. A floppy one can lie down and be measured long.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use three toys: one very big, one in the middle and one very small
Harder: line up the family's shoes by size and guess whose are whose
