Sweep the Path
What you need
- a small brush, like a dustpan brush
- a dustpan
- dry leaves on a path or patio
How to do it
- Show them a patch of path or patio with leaves on it.
- Give them the brush and show slow sweeps in one direction.
- Let them sweep the leaves into one pile while you crouch beside them with the dustpan.
- Hold the dustpan for them to sweep the pile into, then tip it into the garden waste bin or under a hedge.
Why it matters
It's a real job with a result they can see: a clear path and a big pile they made.
What they're learning
- Using a tool
- A brush needs two hands working together and a push in one direction.
- Helping
- Clearing a path is a real household job they can finish.
- Arm movement
- Sweeping a pile together uses the shoulders and arms, not just the hands.
What to look for
Watch for them steering stray leaves back towards the pile without being asked.
A tip
A short-handled brush suits small hands better than a long broom. Check the leaves for anything sharp before they start.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: sweep a little patch by the door
Harder: make two piles, big leaves and small leaves
