Snack Time Pourer: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Snack Time Pourer

from 28 months · 5 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • a small, light plastic jug with a little water or milk in it
  • their own plastic cup

How to do it

  1. At snack time, put a small plastic jug with a little water or milk in it beside their cup.
  2. Stand the cup on a flat surface and let them hold the jug, one hand on the handle, one on the side.
  3. Let them pour, and see what they do as the cup fills.
  4. Mop any drips together, then let them drink what they poured.

Why it matters

Pouring their own drink at snack time is a real job with a real reward, and a jug with only a little in it keeps every spill small.

What they're learning

Pouring
Tipping the jug slowly and bringing it back up.
Doing it themselves
Getting their own drink ready.
Two hands together
One hand on the handle, one steadying the jug.

What to look for

Notice them slowing the pour as the cup gets fuller.

A tip

Keep only a cupful in the jug, so it is light and a spill is small. Cold water or their usual milk only, never a hot drink.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: hold the cup still for them while they pour

Harder: top the jug up for a second cup, so they can pour one for you as well
