Sock Snowball Throw: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Sock Snowball Throw

from 24 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • six pairs of socks
  • a large box or a laundry basket

How to do it

  1. Roll the socks into snowballs together and pile them up.
  2. Stand the box a couple of big steps away and show how to throw a snowball in, overarm.
  3. Take turns throwing, and cheer "in!" or "oops!" each time.
  4. Step back a little after a few goes, then collect all the snowballs and start again.

Why it matters

Throwing at a target takes aim and a big arm swing, and soft sock snowballs mean they can throw indoors.

What they're learning

Throwing
An overarm throw takes a big swing and letting go at the right moment.
Aiming
Looking at the box and trying to hit it links eyes and arm.
Taking turns
Your go, my go keeps the game fair and fun.

What to look for

Notice them stepping forward with one foot as they throw.

A tip

Play away from the tree and anything breakable, and clear a space so nobody trips.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: stand right next to the box and drop them in

Harder: have a gentle sock snowball fight, throwing at each other's legs
