Button Box Sort
What you need
- large buttons or coins
- two bowls
- nothing else needed
How to do it
- Tip the buttons into one bowl and set an empty bowl beside it.
- Show them picking up one button and dropping it into the empty bowl.
- Let them move all the buttons across, one at a time.
- Swap bowls and do it all again in reverse.
Why it matters
Moving one item at a time between bowls builds the deliberate, careful finger control that a one-year-old simply can't manage yet.
What they're learning
- one-at-a-time control
- Moving single items rather than handfuls trains the restraint and precision needed for pouring and serving later.
- hand-eye tracking
- Watching the button all the way from one bowl to the other sharpens the eye-hand link used in catching a ball.
- early sorting
- Grouping by colour when ready is a first taste of the categorising skills used throughout school maths.
What to look for
Watch for them aiming the button over the bowl before letting go, rather than dropping it wherever their hand happens to be.
A tip
Use buttons bigger than a two-pound coin so there's no risk of them going in a mouth if you look away.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use bigger, chunkier buttons that are easier to grip
Harder: ask them to sort by colour into two bowls as they go
