Smoothie Helper
What you need
- a smoothie you blend yourself from a ripe banana, plain yoghurt and a little milk
- a blender, used only by you
- a small, light plastic jug
- two plastic cups
How to do it
- While they play with another adult, or where you can see them, blend the smoothie, then unplug the blender and put it out of reach.
- Pour it into a small plastic jug, only half full.
- At a low table, let them pour one cup for each of you.
- See what they do as the thick drink comes out, then clink cups and drink.
Why it matters
Smoothie is thicker than water and comes out slowly, so there is time to watch the cup fill and tip the jug back up.
What they're learning
- Pouring
- Tipping slowly as a thick drink comes out.
- Sharing out
- One cup for you, one for me.
- Helping in the kitchen
- Doing the pouring part of making something real.
What to look for
Watch for them tipping the jug back up as the cup fills.
A tip
The blender is your job from start to finish: blend while they are well away and watched, unplug it before they come near, and wash the blade yourself out of reach. Use a milk and yoghurt they already have.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: put just a little in the jug at a time, so it stays light
Harder: let them pour a third cup for someone else at home
