Show and Tell Call
What you need
- a phone for a video call to a grandparent or other family member
- a small toy or drawing they choose to show
How to do it
- Before the call, ask them to choose one thing to show: a drawing, a toy, a new pair of shoes.
- Ring a grandparent or someone they know well on a video call, and prop the phone up on a low table where they can see the screen.
- Help them hold it up to the screen and tell the other person about it.
- Ask the other person to show them something back.
Why it matters
Having one thing to show gives a video call a reason, and a reason to talk is easier than 'say hello'.
What they're learning
- Telling someone
- Saying what their thing is and why they chose it.
- Family
- Talking to a grandparent about their own things keeps that person close.
- Taking turns to talk
- You show, then they show: a conversation with a shape.
What to look for
Watch for them holding the thing closer to the screen so the other person can see it.
A tip
Choose a time when they're fresh and the other person isn't rushed. A short call that goes well beats a long one.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the thing up together and let them just point and say a word
Harder: let them choose two things and say one thing about each
