Share It Out
What you need
- a plate of crackers or apple slices, about twelve pieces
- a small plate for each person
How to do it
- Put a small plate out for each person, and the full plate in the middle.
- Ask your child to share the pieces out: one for you, one for me, one for Teddy, round and round.
- When they've all gone, count how many are on each plate together. Is it fair?
- If one plate has more, ask what they could do to make it fair.
Why it matters
One for you, one for me is counting and fairness at the same time, with something to eat at the end of it.
What they're learning
- Sharing out
- Going round the plates one at a time until the pile is gone.
- Counting each plate
- One number for each piece, then saying how many.
- Fair and not fair
- Comparing plates and fixing it when one has more.
What to look for
Notice them going round the plates in order, one each, without skipping anyone.
A tip
Pick something that comes in pieces and won't crumble to dust, and cut round fruit like grapes lengthways.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: share between just two plates
Harder: start with a number that won't share out evenly, like seven, and ask what to do with the last one
