Scarf Through the Box: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Scarf Through the Box

from 12 months · 5-10 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • cereal box
  • scarf

How to do it

  1. Cut a fist-sized hole in the front and back of an empty cereal box.
  2. Push one end of a soft scarf through the front hole so it pokes out the other side.
  3. Show your toddler pulling the scarf all the way through and out.
  4. Feed the scarf back in and let them pull it through again and again.

Why it matters

Pulling a scarf through and watching it disappear then reappear is an early lesson in cause and effect, done at exactly toddler height. The box is this week's cereal packaging, flattened for the recycling once the scarf trick is done.

What they're learning

Pincer grip
Grabbing hold of the scarf's end trains a precise finger and thumb pinch.
Cause and effect
Pulling here and watching the scarf appear there is a clear, repeatable result.
Hand-eye coordination
Following the scarf's end with their eyes as they pull ties sight to hand movement.

What to look for

Watch for them reaching for the scarf's end before it has fully appeared, showing they expect it now.

A tip

Cut the holes smooth with no rough card edges the scarf might snag on.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: leave more scarf poking out the front so it is easier to grab

Harder: feed in a second scarf after the first, kept separate, so there's more to pull
