Ring Pass
What you need
- the two or three biggest rings from a stacking ring toy
- a teddy or soft toy
How to do it
- Sit on the floor in a row: you on one side of your toddler and a teddy on the other.
- Hand them one of the biggest rings only, held out to the hand away from Teddy, and say "Teddy wants it!"
- Wait while the ring travels across and lands with Teddy, then pick it up and bring it back to your side.
- Once it's going well, send it the other way: Teddy hands it over, and your toddler passes it to you.
Why it matters
Handing a ring along from one side to the other is a simple game of pass, and the ring often swaps hands on the way.
What they're learning
- Hand to hand
- The ring comes in on one side and goes out on the other, so it crosses from one hand to the other.
- Giving
- Letting go of something into someone else's lap is a step on from just dropping it.
- Taking turns
- Your go, their go, Teddy's go: the same order every time round.
What to look for
Watch for what their hands do as the ring travels across to Teddy.
A tip
Use only the biggest rings from the stacker and leave the small ones in the box: anything that fits through a toilet roll tube is too small. Put the rings away when the game ends.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: sit Teddy close, right next to their knee, so the ring only travels a short way
Harder: add a second ring, so two are on their way at once
