Undo the Big One: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Undo the Big One

from 26 months · 5 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • their small coat with big buttons

How to do it

  1. Put their coat on for a quick look outside, then come back in and sit them down with it still on.
  2. Start the bottom button out of its hole.
  3. Let them pull it the rest of the way out.
  4. Try the next one up.

Why it matters

Undoing a button is easier than doing one up, so it's the half of the job they can own first.

What they're learning

Undoing
The easier half of buttons comes first.
Pinch and pull
Getting hold of a button and pulling is real finger work.
Getting their coat off
It's the start of doing their coat by themselves.

What to look for

Watch for them going for the button before you offer.

A tip

Use big buttons sewn firmly on, and keep loose ones away. Stay with them while they practise.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: start the button most of the way out

Harder: let them start the button themselves
