Peekaboo Sleeves
What you need
- their long-sleeved top for the day
How to do it
- Open the neck wide and slip the top over their head quickly, keeping their face uncovered, then scrunch the first sleeve up into a short tunnel.
- Hold the open end of the tunnel by their hand and ask "Where's your hand gone?"
- Wait for them to push their arm in and through. When the hand pops out of the cuff, say "Peekaboo, there it is!"
- Do the same with the other sleeve, and wait a little longer before you help.
Why it matters
Turning a sleeve into a peekaboo game gives them a reason to push their own arm through, so getting dressed becomes something they join in with.
What they're learning
- Dressing
- Pushing an arm down a sleeve is a real part of getting dressed.
- Body words
- Hand, arm and foot, named as they disappear and come back.
- Joining in
- A game turns a job done to them into a job done with them.
What to look for
Watch for them straightening their arm and pushing before you say anything.
A tip
Pick a top with a wide neck and loose sleeves for this. A snug one turns the game into a struggle.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: guide their hand into the sleeve and let them do the last push out of the cuff
Harder: play it with trouser legs too: hold one open and wait for a foot to appear at the bottom
