Name Everything on the Table
What you need
- the table in front of you and whatever is on it
How to do it
- Point to something on the table and ask "What's this?"
- Let them point to the next thing and name it, or ask you.
- Then ask "Where is the spoon?" and let them find it.
Why it matters
Naming the everyday things around them, and finding them when you say the word, builds the vocabulary they use every day.
What they're learning
- Naming things
- Matching the word to the thing right in front of them.
- Listening
- Finding the spoon when you say "spoon" shows they understand the word.
- What things are for
- Talking about what each thing does links words to how we use things.
What to look for
Watch for them naming something before you ask, or asking you "what's this?"
A tip
Move hot drinks and sharp knives out of reach before you start. Anything they can touch safely is fair game.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you name each thing and let them touch it
Harder: ask them to name what each thing is for, like "cup is for drinking"
