Look at the Lights Walk
What you need
- a small coat, hat and gloves
How to do it
- Wrap up warm and head out late in the afternoon, once the lights are on in the windows.
- Walk slowly, or push the buggy, and stop at each window with lights.
- Point and say what you see: "lights!", "twinkle", "red", "blue".
- Wave at the lights as you pass, and count a few on the way back.
Why it matters
Lights in the windows are something to stop, point at and talk about, which gives them new words on a calm walk with you.
What they're learning
- Pointing and naming
- Pointing at a light and hearing you name it builds their first words.
- Looking and noticing
- Spotting a light before you do shows they are watching the world.
- Settling
- Fresh air, a slow pace and a hand to hold make a calm end to a busy day.
What to look for
Watch for them pointing at a window before you do, or waving at the lights. Hold hands near roads and driveways.
A tip
Look from the path, never in anyone's garden. Bring the buggy along in case little legs get tired.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: look at the lights from your own front window, wrapped in a blanket
Harder: look for one colour at a time: first blue lights, then red ones
