Under the Cushion
What you need
- a couple of cushions
- two chunky toys they know
How to do it
- Hide two toys under two cushions while they watch.
- Ask for one by name without looking at its cushion: "where's the car?"
- Let them lift a cushion to find it.
- Hide them again in different places.
Why it matters
Watching you hide both means they have to remember which is which from the name, not from where you look.
What they're learning
- Word and memory
- Remembering where the named toy went.
- Finding
- Lifting the right cushion is the win.
- A game together
- Hiding and finding is fun to repeat.
What to look for
Watch for them going straight to the right cushion.
A tip
Say the name without pointing or looking at it; that's what makes it about the word. If they're stuck, point to help and try again another time.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hide just one and leave a bit showing
Harder: hide them while they aren't watching
