What you need
- a hairbrush, a wide comb and a hand mirror
- a small spray bottle of water
- a cloth for the customer's shoulders
- a soft toy or doll with long hair
- a chair for the customer
How to do it
- Set up a salon: a chair for the customer, the mirror, and the brush, comb and spray laid out on a tray.
- Be the first customer yourself, or bring in a doll, and ask for a new style.
- Let your child spray, comb and brush, chatting the whole time the way hairdressers do: going anywhere nice today?
- Hold up the mirror at the end for the customer to admire, and pay with pretend money.
Why it matters
A hairdresser chats, listens and looks after the customer, all parts of a job they've watched from the chair themselves.
What they're learning
- Taking a role
- Being the hairdresser, start to finish.
- Gentle hands
- Brushing without pulling.
- Making conversation
- Asking questions and waiting for answers.
What to look for
Notice them asking the customer a question and waiting for the answer.
A tip
Real scissors stay out of the game: this salon only sprays, combs and brushes. A soft scrunchie or two is fine for styles.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: a teddy customer, and just brushing and spraying
Harder: add a booking: they ask the customer's name, what they'd like, and draw them a pretend appointment card
