Grown-Up Cardigan: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Grown-Up Cardigan

from 26 months · 5-10 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • old clothing items with big buttons, like an adult cardigan

How to do it

  1. Let them put on one of your old cardigans with big buttons.
  2. It'll be huge, which is the fun of it.
  3. Let them undo the buttons down the front.
  4. Do one up together to finish.

Why it matters

A grown-up cardigan has the biggest buttons and the loosest holes in the house, which makes it the easiest thing to practise on.

What they're learning

Big buttons
Bigger buttons and looser holes are easier to manage.
Dressing up
Wearing your clothes is half the fun.
Undoing
Working down the front, button by button.

What to look for

Watch for them working down the buttons one after another.

A tip

Use big buttons sewn firmly on, and keep loose ones away. Stay with them while they practise.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: lay the cardigan on their lap instead of wearing it

Harder: use a top with slightly smaller buttons
