Follow My Leader Walk
What you need
- a garden, park or playground with room to move
How to do it
- Explain the game: whoever is at the front is the leader, and everyone behind copies exactly what they do.
- Lead first: march, tiptoe, gallop, hop on one foot, step over a stick, walk along a low edge.
- Swap so your child leads, and copy everything they do, however silly.
- Take turns leading, with a new way to move every time the leader changes direction.
Why it matters
Leading means thinking up the next move, and following means watching closely, so each turn asks for something different.
What they're learning
- Galloping and hopping
- New ways of getting along.
- Leading
- Thinking up the next move.
- Copying
- Watching and doing the same.
What to look for
Notice them inventing a move you haven't done when it's their turn to lead.
A tip
Keep the route clear of anything to trip on, and choose low edges, no higher than a step.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stick to marching, tiptoeing and jumping
Harder: the leader does two moves in a row, like a hop then a gallop, and everyone copies both
