Sock, Shoe, Coat
What you need
- their socks, shoes and small coat
How to do it
- As you get them ready to go out, name each thing as it goes on: "sock", "shoe".
- Hold the next one up and pause before naming it.
- Let them pass you the next thing if they want to.
- Name the coat last.
Why it matters
Getting dressed happens every day in the same order, so the words come round again and again in the same place.
What they're learning
- Clothes words
- Sock, shoe, coat: words they hear every day.
- Knowing what's next
- The same order each time helps them guess the next word.
- Helping get ready
- Passing you things gives them a part to play.
What to look for
Watch for them picking up the right thing before you ask.
A tip
If a word comes out, however unclear, say it back clearly and add one more: "ball" becomes "big ball". Never ask them to repeat it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just name each item as it goes on
Harder: let them pick which thing goes on next and name it
