Down the Hall
What you need
- a soft ball
- a clear hallway
How to do it
- Clear the hallway of shoes and bags.
- Put the ball down at one end and give it little kicks to move it along.
- Let them take over and kick it all the way to the other end.
- Turn round and kick it back.
Why it matters
Lots of small kicks in a row means a lot of practice in one go, and they have to keep their balance while walking between kicks.
What they're learning
- Little kicks
- Each nudge is a small kick with control.
- Balance on the move
- Walking, kicking and walking again keeps them adjusting all the way.
- Following the ball
- Keeping their eyes on the ball tells their feet where to go.
What to look for
Watch for smaller, gentler kicks once they realise a big one sends the ball away.
A tip
Shoes with a good grip beat socks on a smooth floor. Clear a space first and use a soft, light ball.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: let them walk it along with one foot pushing
Harder: set a toy at the far end to kick the ball up to
