Cushion Cover Buttons: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Cushion Cover Buttons

from 30 months · 5-10 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • a cushion cover with big buttons sewn on

How to do it

  1. Find a cushion cover or duvet cover with big buttons.
  2. Undo one button together, showing how to push it through the hole edge first.
  3. Let them undo the rest, then do them up again one by one.
  4. Count the buttons as they go in.

Why it matters

Buttons on a cushion sit still in their lap, so they can practise without the fiddle of reaching round their own coat.

What they're learning

Buttons
Pushing a button through a hole and pulling it from the other side.
Two hands together
One hand holds the fabric while the other pushes the button.
Counting
Each button is one more done.

What to look for

Watch for them pinching the edge of the hole open with one hand to help the button through.

A tip

Check the buttons are sewn on firmly before you start. Keep loose buttons out of reach.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: just undo them, and you do them up

Harder: time it with a song: can they do them all up before the song ends?
