Cereal Hoop Necklace
What you need
- a small bowl of ring-shaped dry cereal hoops
- a shoelace, knotted at one end
How to do it
- Tip a few hoops into a bowl and sit beside them on the rug: "These are the beads."
- Hold the knotted end of the lace and hand them the tip: "Push it through the hole."
- Count each hoop as it slides down, "one, two, three", and see what they do.
- Tie the ends together and lay the finished necklace on the rug for a teddy to wear, then eat a few hoops together.
Why it matters
A cereal hoop is light, easy to hold and has a hole just the right size, so the lace goes through first time and the string of hoops grows into something they made.
What they're learning
- Threading
- Pushing the tip through the hole and pulling it out the other side.
- Counting
- One more hoop, one more number.
- Making something
- A lace of hoops becoming a necklace for teddy.
What to look for
Notice them counting along with you as the hoops go on.
A tip
Keep the lace well away from necks while you play; the finished necklace is for a teddy, not for the child to wear. Sit with them while they eat the hoops, and put the lace away when you finish.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold each hoop still between your finger and thumb while they push the tip in
Harder: ask for a pattern with two colours of hoop, or count to a number and stop
