Box Inside A Box
What you need
- three cardboard boxes of different sizes
How to do it
- Set out three boxes of different sizes with their lids off.
- Put the little box inside the middle one and the middle one inside the big one.
- Tip them out and let them work out which goes inside which.
- Stack them the other way up, biggest at the bottom, into a tower.
Why it matters
Boxes only fit one way, so they check bigger and smaller by trying rather than guessing.
What they're learning
- Comparing size
- A box that won't fit is bigger; a box that drops in is smaller.
- Trial and error
- Trying, finding it doesn't fit and trying another is patient problem-solving.
- Stacking
- Big at the bottom, little on top, is a steady tower.
What to look for
Watch for them trying a box, finding it won't fit, and reaching for a smaller one.
A tip
Shoeboxes, tissue boxes and delivery boxes make a good set; tape down any flaps that catch.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use two boxes with a big difference in size
Harder: add a fourth box close in size to another
