Coat on the Floor
What you need
- their small coat with big buttons
How to do it
- Lay the coat flat on the floor in front of them, the right way up.
- Kneel beside them, not opposite.
- Let them try a button with the coat lying still.
- Try it on their body another day.
Why it matters
A coat that stays still is much easier than one they're wearing, so laying it flat takes one whole problem away.
What they're learning
- Steady fabric
- A coat on the floor can't move about.
- Pinching
- Both hands working on one button.
- Seeing what they're doing
- Flat and in front means they can watch their hands.
What to look for
Watch for them holding the fabric still with one hand.
A tip
Use big buttons sewn firmly on, and keep loose ones away. Stay with them while they practise.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the fabric either side of the hole for them
Harder: let them do the same button with the coat on
