Bottle Car Wash
What you need
- rinsed plastic bottles
- soapy water
- sponge
- towel
How to do it
- Line up a few rinsed plastic bottles on a towel outside or over a tray indoors.
- Fill a bowl with warm soapy water and give your toddler a sponge.
- Show them wiping suds over a bottle, then rinsing it under a tap or with a cup of clean water.
- Let them wash each bottle in turn, drying it with a towel before setting it aside.
- Line up the clean, dry bottles ready for the recycling.
Why it matters
Wiping suds on, rinsing them off and drying with a towel is a real cleaning sequence toddlers can follow start to finish. Every bottle gets an actual wash before it goes in the recycling, which makes this a genuine household job rather than a pretend one.
What they're learning
- Hand strength
- Wiping and squeezing the sponge over the bottle builds hand and finger strength.
- Focus & persistence
- Following the wash, rinse and dry sequence for every bottle keeps them on the task.
- Sorting
- Setting clean bottles apart from unwashed ones is early sorting with a real purpose.
What to look for
Watch for them checking a bottle for missed suds before calling it clean, rather than stopping after one wipe.
A tip
Use only warm water, never hot, and keep the soapy water in a shallow bowl they cannot tip over easily.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: wash just one bottle at a time with a small amount of water
Harder: sort washed bottles from unwashed ones before starting the next
