Wellies On
What you need
- their wellies
- a mat by the door
How to do it
- Before you head out for a stomp, sit them down on the mat by the door with their wellies.
- Hold the first welly upright and open, toe pointing away from them, just under their foot.
- Let them push their foot down into it while you hold it steady. A wiggle and a push helps the heel go in.
- Do the second one the same way, then stand up together and out you go.
Why it matters
A welly has a wide opening and nothing to fasten, so the push is theirs to do, and they feel their foot go all the way in.
What they're learning
- Pushing a leg through
- Pointing the toes and pushing down takes the whole leg.
- Sitting steady
- Staying upright while one leg pushes hard into the boot.
- Getting ready
- Wellies on means going out, and they did part of it.
What to look for
Watch for them pointing their toes down into the welly before you guide it.
A tip
Wellies a half size roomy go on more easily, but keep them snug enough to walk in. Wet grass and paths are slippery in wellies, so stay close and hold their hand outside.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: guide their toes into the opening and let them do the last push
Harder: let them hold the top of the welly with both hands and pull while you steady it
