Big Sock, Little Sock: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Big Sock, Little Sock

from 16 months · 5 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • one of your socks and one of theirs

How to do it

  1. Hold up your sock and theirs side by side.
  2. Say 'big sock' and 'little sock', and put the little one on their foot.
  3. Let them put a hand in the big sock and laugh at how long it is.
  4. Mix a few pairs up and sort them into big and little piles.

Why it matters

Their own sock next to yours is a size difference they can hold, wear and giggle at.

What they're learning

Size words
Big and little said about two socks they know well.
Sorting
Putting socks into a big pile and a little pile is sorting by size.
Dressing
Getting a sock onto a foot is part of the game, with help as needed.

What to look for

Notice them handing you the big sock without being asked.

A tip

Do it at getting-dressed time and it takes no extra minutes at all.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: just the two socks, named and tried

Harder: add a middle-sized sock from a sibling or a teddy
