Tightrope Tape Walk: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Tightrope Tape Walk

from 26 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • masking tape or string
  • floor space

How to do it

  1. Stick a straight line of tape on the floor, about a metre long.
  2. Hold their hand and walk the line together heel to toe.
  3. Let them try alone, arms out for balance.
  4. Add a gentle curve or zigzag once they're steady.

Why it matters

Walking a line with arms out builds the balance and body control your toddler needs for kerbs, stepping stones, and eventually a real balance beam.

What they're learning

dynamic balance
Staying upright while moving along a narrow path strengthens the balance behind bikes, scooters, and stepping stones.
controlled walking
Placing feet carefully heel to toe builds the fine foot control used for stairs and uneven ground.
focus and patience
Concentrating on staying on the line for a whole minute builds the sit-still-and-focus muscle needed at nursery.

What to look for

Watch for their arms lifting out to the sides on their own, that's balance instinct kicking in.

A tip

Lay the tape on carpet rather than a slippery floor so a wobble doesn't turn into a slip.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: make the line wider or shorter

Harder: ask them to carry a soft toy across without dropping it
