Screen-free activities for 2 year olds

Play and activities

Why two is a good age for this

Somewhere around two, children get interested in doing the things they see adults do. That is the lever. A two year old who will not sit with a puzzle will happily pour water from one cup to another for a quarter of an hour, or sort a basket of clean washing into piles, because it looks like real work. Screen-free does not have to mean crafts. It mostly means letting them join in with the ordinary.

The World Health Organization suggests very little screen time before three and plenty of active play instead. You do not need to hit a target. Having something to hand for the moments you would usually pass over the phone is what makes the difference.

Ideas that hold a two year old

Give them a few clear plastic tubs with screw lids and a large pom-pom hidden inside each. Twisting a lid off is hard work at two and they will keep at it. Tip a bag of rolled oats into a deep tray with some cups and a funnel, and the scooping and pouring runs itself. Lay two dish towels on the floor as puddles and jump between them with both feet.

Pretend play is new at this age and worth leaning into. Two soft toys, a couple of empty cups and a cloth make a tea party. A few tins from the cabinet and a small bag make a shop. You are the customer. Buy the same tin four times.

Building it into the day

Rather than a big block of screen-free time, look for the three or four moments in a day when the screen usually appears: while you cook, in the gap before a nap, the slump at half past four. Each of those wants a different kind of activity, a busy one for the cooking gap and a calm one for the pre-nap slump. Pick one idea per moment and keep it the same for a week. Familiar activities work better than new ones for a two year old, who likes knowing what comes next.

It also helps to accept that some screen time will happen and stop counting it. A day with three good stretches of play and twenty minutes of a cartoon is a good day.

Try these first

The activities below all suit two year olds and take a minute or two to set up. Each has its own page with the steps, what to look for and a switch-up for when the first version goes stale. Start with the one that looks most like something you were going to do anyway.
